Arunachal Gets 25 Trained Forensic Personnel, After Decade-Long Gap

Gandhinagar : In a significant boost to the criminal justice system of Arunachal Pradesh, 25 Laboratory Technician Assistants of the State Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) have successfully completed a six-month intensive training programme in Crime Scene Management at the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU), Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

The development marks the induction of the first major batch of forensic personnel recruited in the state after a gap of more than a decade. The personnel were appointed through direct recruitment in March this year and were subsequently deputed to NFSU for specialised training.

The trained personnel comprise officials from various forensic divisions, including Biology, Ballistics, Narcotics, Cyber and Digital Forensics, and Questioned Documents. They are expected to play a crucial role as Crime Scene Officers in the state.

The six-month residential course provided comprehensive training in scientific crime scene management, including the collection and preservation of evidence, preliminary testing at crime scenes, advanced laboratory analysis, DNA profiling, fingerprint lifting, crime scene photography and documentation, and digital investigation techniques for tackling cybercrime.

The trainees underwent rigorous classroom sessions, mock crime scene exercises and hands-on practical training conducted by faculty members of the School of Forensic Science and experts in cyber forensics at NFSU.

Interacting with a media delegation from Arunachal Pradesh visiting NFSU, the trainees described forensic science as a vital component of the criminal justice system.

“We have received excellent theoretical and practical exposure here. We are ready to serve the state. Real learning will continue on the ground,” one of the trainees said.

The State Forensic Science Laboratory is presently functioning from the premises of the Police Training Centre (PTC) under Police Headquarters (PHQ) at Chimpu, Itanagar. The trainees said that the laboratory infrastructure has been upgraded and major modern forensic equipment has already been installed.

The induction of the 25 trained personnel is expected to strengthen the state’s forensic capabilities, reduce dependence on laboratories outside the state, facilitate faster forensic examination and reporting, and support more efficient criminal investigations and prosecution.

The newly trained personnel also appealed to the youth of Arunachal Pradesh to consider forensic science as a career option.

“Very few people are aware of the opportunities in this field. Students should look beyond traditional courses and explore Forensic Science programmes offered by NFSU, which can open career opportunities as Scientific Assistants and Scientific Officers,” they said.

The strengthening of the State FSL is expected to provide a more scientific and technology-driven approach to crime investigation in Arunachal Pradesh and further improve the state’s criminal justice delivery system.
